Arre bhai I just came back from Coolie and my brain is still dancing. This is a full on action ride with Rajinikanth as Deva and Nagarjuna as Simon. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj with Sun Pictures backing and Kalanithi Maran steering the ship. Runtime is about 2 hours 48 minutes but I swear time just flew for me. A big chunk was shot in Vishakhapatnam port area and you can almost smell the sea yaar.
Fun nugget. They built a mad dock set with real containers and trained stunt teams right there. Also the film plays in Tamil Hindi Telugu and Kannada so my theatre felt like a mini India carnival.
Coolie Movie Cast and Crew
Rajinikanth is a swag machine. Entry scene started and pura theatre ghoom gaya excitement se. I grew up on Sivaji and Enthiran and Jailer and that same spark lights up again here. One close look from him and I was screaming inside.
Nagarjuna as Simon gives calm danger. steady eyes. very stylish. Shruti Haasan brings steel as Preethi and gets a proper arc. Soubin Shahir as Dayal runs the port zone with scary calm. Upendra and Aamir Khan drop fun cameos and the hall went mad with claps.
Lokesh Kanagaraj knows momentum and mass mood. Earlier he gave Kaithi and Vikram and once again he swings big. Girish Gangadharan frames the docks like paintings. Philomin Raj cuts the fights with snap. And Anirudh Ravichander. uff the score moves like a heartbeat then turns tender and I felt all the feels.
Coolie Movie Review
I went in thinking okay another revenge story. But this felt like a proper vendetta with heat. Deva carries hurt from youth and every move says I will fix this. When Rajasekar falls and the family breaks my throat went tight. Preethi blasting Deva early on gave a sharp jolt. Then the thread pulls into Simon and the port mafia and I was like ok game on.
Action lands solid. One warehouse rain stretch with an old song vibe had me clapping like mad. Dialogue hits mass energy. the cuts keep tempo. Only in the middle I felt a tiny dip. but then a flashback swings in and boom I was back on the edge.
Music by Anirudh is fire. Background cues breathe with the character beats. In one quiet moment the score hums low and I felt tears trying to escape. End me toh main thoda senti bhi ho gayi matlab thoda aansu bhi. Also there is a festival style anthem that turned my row into mini garba mode.
The look is lush. Vishakhapatnam lanes. slippery docks. smoky night lights. You can sense salty wind on your face. Friends said many night shoots happened to catch real ship movement. That authenticity shows and I loved it.
Quick takes. Acting is spicy. Rajinikanth holds the fort. Nagarjuna gives cool menace. Shruti is strong and steady. Direction is bold. Screenplay packs many threads. sometimes it spills but the highs really explode and the intent feels honest. This is a dark action drama with heart so fans of intense stories and big hero swag will be very happy.
On box office. Going by Sacnilk numbers this is a hit in my book. Big start. strong week one. and a steady run to 273 plus crore India net by day 17 with 498 crore worldwide gross on Sacnilk. For a budget in the 350 to 400 crore zone that is a good win and the theatre vibe screams repeat value. I walked out pumped and also a little emotional. Recommendation. watch on a weekend with friends when you need a rush and a few goosebumps. Bas yaar paisa vasool ho gaya.

Coolie Movie Budget
People were whispering the budget is around 350 to 400 crore. You can see the money in every frame. Giant sets. rusted ships. heavy crowds. slick action rigs. The production value fully matches the spend. No cutting corners boss.
Now the numbers that made me dance in the aisle. Sacnilk says Day 1 India net was 65 crore. Week 1 stood at 229.65 crore India net. By Day 17 Sacnilk shows about 273.72 crore India net. Also Sacnilk lists near 498 crore worldwide gross. My heart did bhangra after seeing that. Feels like everyone showed up with popcorn in both hands.

Coolie Movie FAQs
Q: So is Coolie another Lokesh Kanagaraj masterpiece?
A: Not really. His style is there but the story feels messy and overstuffed with ideas.
Q: Why is everyone talking about the cameos in Coolie?
A: Because big stars like Aamir Khan show up, but honestly they don’t add much value.
Q: Did Rajinikanth deliver in this movie?
A: Totally. His screen presence and energy are amazing and pretty much carry the entire film.
Q: What’s the one thing that actually saves the movie?
A: Definitely Rajinikanth’s performance and Anirudh Ravichander’s mind blowing music and background score.
Conclusion:
Coolie is making serious money at the box office, but it’s a bit of a letdown. Rajinikanth is amazing as always and Anirudh’s music is fire, but the story is just all over the place. It’s a one-time watch, mostly for Thalaivar fans who just want to see him on screen.
